What are my options for
communicating between the handheld and a cabled PC? |
|
| |
| |
There are 3 choices. First, we
have a program called NTSCOM written for the Windows environment. Running
NTSCOM permits the handheld to control communications with the PC. It is our
recommended solution for communications with a Windows PC. See "NTS Solutions: Development Tools" on our web site for more information. Secondly, there is the PsiWin
program for Windows. It requires the computer operator to identify the correct
file on the handheld (or PC) and drag it to the attached computer (or handheld)
with a mouse. Dragging and dropping is more inconvenient and error prone than automatic communications using NTSCOM (copy wrong file, copy file to wrong folder, forget a file, etc.). The PsiWin program requires much more memory on your hard disk to
install than NTSCOM, and is known to be difficult to uninstall. PsiWin is no longer supported by Psion. Finally, there is a free DOS utility called RCOM. We can email this program to you at no cost, but it can be problematic in a Windows environment.
The 3 PC programs mentioned above all utilize the LINK program on the Workabout. The LINK program is supplied as part of the Workabout EPOC operating system. The LINK program must be running on the Workabout for the PC communications program to work. There are 3 ways to run the LINK program on the Workabout.
Go to the Workabout System screen. Hit MENU and select REMOTE LINK on the SPECIAL tab. Set the parameters as necessary.
Go to the Workabout Command Processor. Hit MENU and select REMOTE LINK on the SPECIAL tab. Set the parameters as necessary.
Include the necessary programming in a custom application to run the LINK program automatically.
You may stop the LINK program on the Workabout by selecting the same menu options and changing the REMOTE LINK status to OFF. Or, you can terminate the LINK from within a custom application.
If you wish to communicate between the Workabout and a PC via a standard file transfer protocol, such as XMODEM or YMODEM, which is required to communicate via modem, then you will need a capable PC program, such as PROCOMM. On the Workabout there are 3 methods of transferring files utilizing standard file transfer protocols.
Use the COMMS program, supplied with the Workabout EPOC operating system. The COMMS program is accessible from the System Screen, and has menu driven functions to set the protocol and send/transmit files.
Use the COMMS program with a script (batch file) that automatically establishes communications and transfers files.
Include the necessary programming in a custom application to automatically establish communications and transfer files.
If you wish to use the built-in COMMS program on the Workabout, you'll have to have the application user end the application program in order to run the COMMS program. Rather than use the COMMS program, it would be most convenient for the user to select a function within an application to transfer files, so that they never have to leave the same application.

Why doesn't PsiWin work? |
|
| |
| |
Make sure the PsiWin baud rate
on the PC is the same baud rate as on the handheld, rather than "Fastest
Attainable". We recommend a baud rate of 19,200. Of course, it's a good
idea to make sure the plug is securely fastened to the PC and handheld.
Use PsiWin 2.3.3 for Windows 98, NT, 2000, ME and XP.
Use PsiWin 2.3.1 for Windows 95, 98 and NT.
To connect to WorkAbouts using PsiWin 2.3.2 / 2.3.3, you must install the registry patch
psiwin232regfix.reg after installing PsiWin. You can download this patch by clicking on its name.
Psion says that PsiWin 2.3.2 and 2.3.3 are beta versions, released
for the purpose of bug testing, and which include recently discovered bugs.
The patch for 2.3.2 was not made in time for inclusion in 2.3.3, therefore
the patch is required for both versions.
If running on Windows 2000, first try PsiWin 2.3.1 and stick with this version if it works.
Otherwise, use PsiWin 2.3.3 and make sure:
to install the registry patch
set PsiWin baud rate property to 19200 or 115K (in other words, do
not leave it set to Maximum attainable).
If you'd like to avoid this mess, try NTSCOM!

Why do I get a "Services Not Supported" error on the Workabout when transferring files
from the Workabout to the PC using NTSCOM? |
|
| |
| |
If you change the settings for NTSCOM and don't click on Save, it's possible the settings file wasn't saved correctly. Here's how you find out and easily fix it.
Under the Windows folder on your PC find the file PSIONPRC.INI and open it with Notepad.
If the second line reads "engine=prcenwin.exe -x", remove the "-x". The second line should now read "engine=prcenwin.exe". Save the file and quit Notepad.
Also, if your Workabout program allows you to choose between NTSCOM and Psiwin for PC communications, make sure you have chosen NTSCOM if you want the Workabout program to automatically copy the files.
Try your transfer again.

How do I run LINK on the Workabout? |
|
| |
| |
In order for the Workabout to communicate with either NTSCOM, RCOM, or PsiWin it must run a complimentary program. This program, called "LINK", on the Workabout that communicates with the PC via NTSCOM, RCOM, and PsiWin is built into the Workabout firmware, and is therefore included free with each Workabout as part of the Workabout operating system.
We recommend using NTSCOM over RCOM and PsiWin for the PC communications program.
We recommend running the Workabout LINK program BEFORE running the PC communications program.
There are a few different ways to run the LINK on the Workabout. Here are detailed steps for one method to run the LINK program on the Workabout:
Begin at the initial start up screen.
Hit the MENU key.
Highlight the COMMAND PROCESSOR with the up/down arrow keys and hit ENTER.
See the "M>" prompt and hit the MENU key.
Hit the "L" key. See REMOTE LINK highlighted, and hit ENTER.
Use the left/right arrow keys to toggle the Remote link to ON.
Use the up/down and left/right arrow keys to select 19200 Baud rate and
Port C.
- Note Port C is the LIF port on the bottom of the Workabout where you
plug in the 3Link cable.
- If you want to communicate through the RS232 port on top of the Workabout TTL or on the bottom of the Workabout Laser model, then use Port A.
- If you want to communicate through the RS232 port on top of the Workabout BCR model, then use Port B.
Hit ENTER. This turns on the LINK.
Now you can exit the COMMAND PROCESSOR if you wish by typing EXIT and
hitting ENTER.

I received a Workabout program update via email. How do I use this to update my Workabout program? |
|
| |
| |
Workabout program updates sent via email come in the form of a file or files that need to be downloaded to the Workabout. The file or files may be new to your program or may replace previous versions.
First, we need to prepare two subfolders on the PC. Assuming you're using NTSCOM for PC communications with the Workabout, use Windows Explorer to create a subfolder under "c:\ntscom\" called "c:\ntscom\new\" and another called "c:\ntscom\updt\". If you have already created these subfolders before, then delete all files in both subfolders. Leave Windows Explorer running with the "c:\ntscom\updt\" current. Of course, be careful not to delete any files in the "c:\ntscom\" folder. We will be using the \new\ subfolder to hold your emailed update files. We will be using the \updt\ subfolder to upload your current Workabout program files from the Workabout, then update them with your new files, then download the updated set of files back to the Workabout.
The emailed update may be zipped or not. If it is zipped you'll need to unzip it using WinZip. Unzip into the "c:\ntscom\new\" subfolder. If you don't have WinZip a trial version is available as a free download from the internet. Try www.winzip.com/ddchomea.htm or www.winzip.com. If your program update is not zipped then save the file(s) from the email to the "c:\ntscom\new\" subfolder.
Your Workabout program may reside in one of three possible memories, the internal RAM, an SSD in the A: drive, or an SSD in the B: drive. If your program is stored in the internal RAM, then it is stored on the M: drive. The M: drive cannot be write protected, so you can advance to the next paragraph. If your program is on an SSD, then you should make sure the SSD is not write protected. Do this by unlatching the Workabout internal drawer and sliding it out. Look at the side of the drawer. You'll see two slots for SSD's. They are labled A: and B: on the drawer. Remove the SSD from the drawer, noting from which slot you removed it, A: or B:. Now look at the back of the SSD. You'll notice along one side it says "PROTECT<>WRITE". Now look on the side of the SSD next to those words. You'll see a tiny switch. Make sure that switch is in the WRITE position. If you need to change the switch you can use an opened paper clip. Re-insert the SSD into the same drive from which it was removed.
Make sure the Workabout is physically attached to the PC, either via a cable or docking equipment, such as the Workabout Serial Cable (#17-001), Docking Holster Solution(#11-003), or Docking Station Solution(#11-002).
Now that the program update files are in the "c:\ntscom\new\" folder, and the target Workabout memory is write enabled, we need to run the LINK program on the Workabout. If you need instructions for this see How do I run LINK on the Workabout?.
With the LINK running on the Workabout, run the NTSCOM program on the PC and establish communications by clicking on the CONNECT button in NTSCOM. Wait for NTSCOM to establish a link with the Workabout.
Back to the Workabout. The first thing we want to do is upload all of your current program files from the Workabout to the PC. We will assume all of the files to update are in the root directory of the Workabout. At the Workabout COMMAND PROCESSOR "M>" prompt type "copy x:\*.* rem::c:\ntscom\updt\", where "x" is the appropriate target memory drive, either "m", "a", or "b", then hit the ENTER key on the Workabout. Note where there are spaces and no spaces. There are only two spaces. One is just after the word "copy". The other is just before the "rem". You should see the files copying both on the Workabout screen and in the Windows Explorer window on the PC.
Back to the PC. Update the Workabout program files with the new files by using Windows Explorer to copy all of the new files from "c:\ntscom\new\" to the "c:\ntscom\updt\" folder. You may want to back up the older files we just uploaded to "c:\ntscom\updt\" somewhere first, just in case. If any of the new files have the same file name, which is very likely, then Windows Explorer will prompt you whether you want to overwrite the old file with the new. Of course, you'll want to say yes. That's the whole reason for this exercise right?
Back to the Workabout. If you store your program on an SSD we should erase it to prepare for the updated program. At the Workabout COMMAND PROCESSOR "M>" prompt type "format x:", where "x" is the appropriate target memory drive, either "a" or "b", then hit the ENTER key on the Workabout. Note where there are spaces and no spaces. There is only one space. It is just before the "x". This is an inherently dangerous operation because you could erase the wrong drive, so please be careful that "a" or "b" is the correct drive.
At the Workabout COMMAND PROCESSOR "M>" prompt type "copy rem::c:\ntscom\updt\*.* x:\", where "x" is the appropriate target memory drive, either "m", "a", or "b", then hit the ENTER key on the Workabout. Note where there are spaces and no spaces. There are only two spaces. One is just after the word "copy". The other is just before the "x". You should see the files copying on the Workabout screen but not in the Windows Explorer window on the PC.
OK, we're finished updating your Workabout program on the Workabout! Now you should write-protect your SSD if that is where the program resides. You can stop the LINK program on the Workabout by following the same steps you used to run it except toggle it OFF instead of ON. You can exit the COMMAND PROCESSOR by typing "exit" at the "M>" prompt on the Workabout. You can end NTSCOM on the PC by clicking on the EXIT button. You may or may not want to end the Windows Explorer program on the PC.

The latch on the back of the MX
generation of Workabout can be locked. There is a red circular disk on the back
near the latch. This red disk is the lock. It has 3 dimples on it. You may
purchase a specialized key for this lock from NTS. If the lock rotated
accidentally and you don't have a key, you can probably unlock the latch by
using a straightened paper clip. |

I have installed an NTS product, which is copy protected using a parallel HASP device and my printer is not printing correctly. What can I do? |
|
| |
| |
This may occur if the BIOS setting of the LPT port is set as a “Bi-Directional” type of port such as EPP or ECP. Try setting the port to a “Normal” LPT device within the BIOS settings. Alternatively, you may exchange your parallel HASP for a USB HASP. |

I've upgraded my PC operating system and now the HASP device that came with the NTS brand software program won't work. What can be done? |
|
| |
| |
NTS brand software products, such as NTSCOM, were shipped with HASP drivers which you must have installed some time ago for the software product to run. The older driver may not be compatible with newer operating systems, or for that matter newer HASP's. The first thing you should try is to download the latest HASP driver and install it. The latest driver is available for free from Aladdin's web site. Try ftp.ealaddin.com/pub/hasp/new_releases/driver/Hinstall.zip or www.aladdin.com/support/hasp/hasp4/enduser.asp#latestDD and download the "Hinstall.zip" file. When you unzip it you should find the "HINSTALL.EXE" file. Just overwrite the older "HINSTALL.EXE" file with the new one and run the HBAT.BAT file. If you can't find the HBAT.BAT file, then go to the Windows Command Processor ("DOS Prompt") and the folder where the "HINSTALL.EXE" file is and type "hinstall.exe -i" then the ENTER key.

Why are the LED's on my Workabout Charger (Part #12-012) off when they shouldn't be? |
|
| |
| |
The LED(s) only light when the Charger is plugged in the wall and the Workabout, and a good rechargeable battery is in the Workabout. No LED will light in the following cases:
Workabout Charger not fully plugged in the wall outlet.
No current in the outlet (light switch is off).
Workabout Charger not fully plugged into the Workabout LIF port.
No rechargeable battery is in the Workabout.
Incompatible rechargeable battery in the Workabout. (NiCd and NiMH from NTS are compatible.)
Rechargeable battery in the Workabout is so very dead the Workabout can't sense it.
The metal contact on the rechargeable battery has broken off.
Workabout fuse is blown.
Workabout Charger is broken.
Rechargeable battery has reached the end of its useful life. (Can't sustain a charge.)

Do we have to use only Psion brand rechargeable batteries? |
|
| |
| |
Yes. The Workabout is designed to use very specific batteries. If you use a different rechargeable battery, say from Radio Shack, you will run the risk of damaging the hardware, fire, and even possible explosion. If you do cause damage by using a non-Psion battery, the warranty will not cover replacement or repairs.

My new rechargeable battery won't charge. Am I doing something wrong or does it need to be replaced? |
|
| |
| |
While there is a small chance that it is bad and needs to be replaced, it is much more likely that a small prong needs adjustment. Several of our customers have reported this problem and the following fix rectified the problem.
The fix is to GENTLY AND SLIGHTLY pull the little metal prong between the battery cells outward. Then re-insert the battery pack and recharge it again. The little silver metal prong hangs down between the battery cells from the top where there is a small black plastic tab. The metal prong hangs down on the side of the battery pack opposite from the side with the long black plastic piece with writing on it. The problem of the battery not recharging comes from the little silver metal prong not making contact with the "mating" metal strip inside the Workabout battery compartment.
